I lived in NYC for ten years, stuff happened like this all the time. People are so alienated and overwhelmed by the city that they just hunker down with the same thousand-yard stare that PTSD soldiers have.
I remember I was on a metro-north train coming back into the city one weekend. An elderly woman stood up and was trying to make her way down the train as it bumped along. She was unsteady on her feet and kept weaving, almost fell over. I watched her go by dozens of young people who glanced up, and then hurriedly looked down at their phones. It was pretty disgusting. Of course I jumped up, took her arm and helped her down the train, but right after that I realized I had to get the fuck out.
Now I live in a comfy red state which has its own share of problems, but nobody would ever fucking let some grandma wobble unescorted down a train. And if they saw something like this they would intervene and shoot the feral if needed.
