Squats are good for other things, physically carrying the heavy weight hits your nervous system differently from leg press.

Personally I mix squats and leg press. If I hit both in the same leg workout pretty much nothing else I do matters, all the other exercises are just for accessories or vanity (calf raises).

I can't deadlift if I do leg press on the same day. I can do Squats and deadlifts on the same day just fine.

squats hurt me but I can still test a max every so often and improve as long as I'm leg pressing and deadlifting

Squats activate more muscles, it takes considerably more time until you get the same mind/muscle connection you get with leg presses.
I've come around on the squat, I alternate between them now.
