Why is there so much rampant cheating, you have a guy you looked after his body, trained it, wants to look after his country and his girl and he gets cheated on.
Why isn't this way more looked down on? People bitch about stolen Valor but turn a blind eye to this.

the fact that you think any of these factor in to the mental calculus of someone cheating or not is laughable.

most military towns are whovilles and bumblefucks. latching onto a 20-something kid with his first steady paycheck, a dodge charger, and an apartment is a means to independence for a lot of the women that go after military guys. they're not with the dude for him, they're with him for his resources. the next guy to come around that can provide something she wants means the next guy to leech off of. bonus points when you can leech off multiple men at once.

There's a couple reasons. explains a lot of the modern situation in the US military, but this problem is obviously much older than that.

Women cheat often on military guys because of long times away, loss of connection and little contact. The reality is people are meant to be together, and the idea of a society where SOME men go to war and others stay back is actually very strange and abnormal. Generally every time there has been large wars and conflict, women cheating is horribly looked down upon, and the men who they cheated with are viewed as the biggest scum of society and normally end up killed. However in the modern wars, its people who willingly sign up to fight away for years elsewhere. It's largely irrelevant about the military here why the girls cheat, if a guy starts dating a girl and then says hes going to do a 4 year PHD program in another country and won't see her for 4 years, do you really expect her to stick around? If you were 20 and dating a girl, and she said she was going to be away for 4 years for university, and then will come back, are you really going to wait around? In those 4 years you will be fundamentally different people, and you don't have kids or other strong bonds, it seems unreasonable to wait instead of finding a better option that suits your path in life.

Old military societies would not have the issue of cheating because they sent all the young men in the village at one time to war together, so the women would have no options to cheat or find a new guy. Even in the case of a guy who may not be able to fight and stays back, if he gets involved with some girl, the elders of the community as well as the family would often kill them, or have some other extreme punishment to resolve the issue.
