In case you wanted a real answer, generally no because squats are already quad dominant and doing front squats shifts even more work to the quads.

That said, they are good for breaking plateus and also better for core stability. They also are good for preventing back injury since degrading form is more obvious and will force you to dump the weight instead of grinding through.

Although for someone with a bad back, split squats would probably be better (regular ones, like a lunge without the movement, not the rear leg elevated version). That actually shows better glute and abductor activation than the regular squat to parallel or even the full squat relative to load. But on top of that, having just one leg do most of the work at a time is a great way to reduce back strain. With one of the largest trap bars, you can even reduce torque by doing a split squat with the weight at the hips. Although most bars are a bit small for this and it is awkward to learn.

Problem is that you have to do twice as many sets doing one leg at a time, which is brutal. But if your back is fucked, high rep, unilateral legs are the best bet (trap bar, maybe from blocks, is good too for that).

If you want to be a quadzilla I recommend hack squats over front squats because you can load way heavier due to core not being a limiting factor. Huge difference, most people can hack squat a solid % more than they can dead, whereas a front squat will be like 85% of a back squat and a lunge/split movement will be even lower.

you use back squats to increase your front squat. not the other way around. but front squats are great for thoracic spine, core, quads, and posture, so don't rule them out either.
