Why is he a legendary hero of rebellion in half-life 2 when he was just some rando trying to survive in HL1 and nobody even saw him do any of the stuff he did in Black Mesa? Do they ever actually explain this?

He's only the hero of a rebellion when you destroy nova prospekt. Which is what kickstarted the rebellion in the first place. No one even recognizes him in the beginning of the game except a few people from black mesa.

Not directly BUT hear me out.
First of all VERY few survivors

it was Dr. Kleiner, and Dr. Vance who sent him up.
Barney also helped and survived.
Freeman is known to have stopped the invasion by launching the rocket and helping Lambda team.
Xen would have conquered the planet if not for gordon.

Now I think a better question should be how the hell did these few people become leaders/hero's to the common person.

Yes they are the greatest minds alive but I feel like the average person would blame them for the incident that literally fucked the planet!

For the record I don't blame them but I get why people should want their heads!

After he gets the suit a vast majority of the rebel NPCs recognize him immediatley

also, why is the lambda, the logo for a specific complex in black mesa, a symbol of rebellion too?

Gee if only there was a race of hyper-intelligent aliens that Gordon freed from slavery and are also fully aware of the alien fuckery going on behind the scenes like the Gman and his employers and have the power to interact and interfere with those larger forces and spread the tales of Gordon's heroics to others.

I finished Opposing Force recently and it was great (didn’t like the final boss though). Does/will Corporal Shepard ever make an appearance again?

>also, why is the lambda, the logo for a specific complex in black mesa, a symbol of rebellion too?
Preserving the franchise's imagery, mostly.
You can say it's because the Lambda complex helped Gordon stop the Xen invasion, but it's mostly just the franchise branding.

Rebels also don't all recognize Gordon. Everything prior to Black Mesa East Gordon will not be recognized or you'll get responses to the effect of "you're that freeman guy"

>Does/will Corporal Shepard ever make an appearance again?
Nope, he hasn’t re-appeared in over two decades. Same with Race X. Fuck, the Half Life community can’t even come to an agreement if he’s canon or not.
FYI he was supposed to get a sequel in Arkane’s Return to Ravenholm which got cancelled. Barney has more of a chance of getting another expansion than Adrian.

The vortigaunts told people what happened

He is in stasis still

Has this been bait the entire time? Dude fights off an alien invasion and the US military and jumps into another dimension to fight a cosmic being and you don't think survivors from black mesa wouldn't have said something about it?

He's only a hero to vortigaunts at the beginning.

They don't. There's a guy in canals who even says "they're looking for freeman? Would hate to be that guy. Doesn't stand a chance"

Not even canon

We say it's canon. Get fucked

One day....

Are you one of those faggots that think Barney in Blue Shift and Barney in HL2 are separate characters?

That guy doesn't, but others in the canals do.

well for one numerous members of his former science team became key members of the resistance, so when they told stories of this one guy who btfo'd the military, the invading aliens, and the big ayyy on the other side in an attempt to close the portals, no shit it would produce hype, then you also got the vorts who joined them who while having numerous of their own killed by him, also recognize the fact he freed them from said massive ayyy along with those killings being acts fo self defense so they are mostly thankful for him, in other words you got another group backing up the claims about some autist in a orange suit going wild, and for the cherry on top he just one day pops out of fucking no where and already fought a few cps by that point so the hype train for once lives up to expectations so its no wonder people treat him like hot shit, especially by the time of the uprising were he just fucked up a notorious prison

>Some rando
He was literally at the center of the resonance cascade and freed the Vortigaunts from the Nihilanth's grasp. The few survivors of the Black Mesa incident, in addition to the entire Vortigaunt species with their spirituality and oneness shit, sang songs of praise for the dude because of the shit that he did. They needed to unite the rebels under a banner, and what better banner than the legendary hero that saved the world from an alien invasion?

You met the rebels in the canals and people in Black Mesa East notified the outposts of his arrival so that they could facilitate his escape from the city. It's like back in the original HL where Lambda team tracks your HEV suit and sent people throughout Black Mesa to help you out.

Did Gman just "nudge" every Black Mesa survivor into City 17 or something? You'd think there at least be random scientists from eastern europe or wherever who got word that rebels were doing crazy physics shit.

probably breen fuckery

well city 17 was pretty much the capital of the combines Earth so it would make sense for the resistance to set up camp nearby to keep in close contact with the local resistance cells

so

Breen feeling bad probably moved all the Black Mesa staff left into City 17 with the thought they'd get better treatment there compared to other cities across the Earth
