I don’t understand how this show is so insanely popular seemingly all around the world. The show had 1 good season with the rest of it having some of the worst writing and characters that I’ve seen in even modern shows. The fights are not even a selling point anymore because they are generic anime fights where characters stand around and talk for half of it and forget half of the abilities that they have been established to have. How is this shit popular?

Good character designs can take you a looong way, just look at Kurumi from Date A Live, or 2B, or Touhou in general, how many people who love these characters are interested in the source material? Not nearly as much as you think.
With a good design as a base you can get enough attention to have people build shit by themselves, possibly bigger and better than you yourself could ever do. Bowsette is also a recent example of this.
RWBY has a really solid base, cute girls with nice designs and a basic setting with a lot of potential, everything else I can headcanon by myself or let others do their thing, I heard there's plenty of decent fanfics. A solid base is what's really imprtant most of times.
