What went wrong with Doom 3?

It was a game that essentially just existed to show off the tech of the new id engine, its what happens when you put a programmer in charge.

you say that like it's a bad thing

Babbies first horror game
It was good for what it was but would have been better served as a stand alone rather than a doom title

Everything was shiny and wet

Edginess

Nothing. It was a good game for its time, it just didn't age well. I have a feeling the recent Doom game will have the same thing happen to it. Doom was just a product of its era. The original Doom doesn't hold up as much as it does now, but it was amazing in 1996 when I first played it.

Contrarian 20-year-olds will tell you nothing but the game was too dark and the guns sucked.

Abysmal art direction that made everything appear as if it was wrapped in plastic foil

Was my first Doom I was able to play through completely. Still think it's the best one after playing the rest of them. It got the atmosphere perfect and wasn't just mindlessly dumping ammo into whatever enemy is in the area, the game

>make horror game
>it's literally nothing but 8 hours of super-telegraphed "jumpscares"
No idea why they got so obsessed with it, if it was just at the start to seet the mood and such it would be fine, but the majority of the game is just the same shit.
Only part that was fun was Hell, and that's because it was just run and gun.

Monster design was also generic as fuck, it's like they got hit by the brown and grey fad of the early 2010s, but somehow half a decade earlier.

You can also tell that everything is half itself flipped. Like everything had a line down the center and it was very obvious.

They fucked up the monster designs when fans just wanted the iconic red fleshy and muscular ones from the classic DOS entries.

all the people who made Doom fun had been kicked out of the studio by then because according to Adrian Carmack, Tim Willits was acting like Grima Wormtongue to John Carmack and convincing him that the others were holding id back, this is on top of Willits allegedly sabotaging the others by telling them to do stuff that he knew John Carmack would hate, then feigning that the person came up with it themselves and using that as excuses to fire them

this is kind of reinforced by the fact that Sandy Peterson, John Romero, American Mcgee, and Adrian Carmack hating his guts, and Willits making ludicrous claims like how he invented deathmatch-only maps for Quake, which EVERY OTHER DEV INVOLVED has said is false

John Carmack was too isolated and autistic about technology so he just believed him, and whilst Doom 3 is a big technical achievement, it's gameplay is lacking due to the lack of the old guard making it fast and fun to play

>They fucked up the monster designs
That's not Eternal.

It's like whenever talks about how this good game is they forget to talk about the first few hours that is nothing but Imps, zombies and a few low level shits with a dinky pistol and shotgun and an alright assault rifle.

Give Eternal credit for at least referencing the original monsters for their designs. Much better than 3 and 2016 on that front (Except the revenant, they fucked that one).

Doom 3’s monsters were gray and dull looking. They looked less like demons and more like generic aliens.

I like the Hell Knight redesign, I was never a fan of it being a Baron recolour in the original, although this is kind of undermined by the fact that there are no actual Barons in Doom 3

It was fucking boring
Yes

It tried to subvert expectations in a time when the industry wasn’t filled by fags and women, so it didn’t work.

Nothing.

nothing it was perfect for its time

Hell Knights being a lesser race related to Barons is more interesting than them being a featureless grey blob

Nothing. The better question is what went wrong with Doom 2016?

Nothing really. It's a fine game with some nice attention to detail. The interactive panels and monitors are a great touch. Well, I guess the worst thing it did was have a pretty lame shotgun. It was balanced around barrel stuffing enemies in the super tight rooms so it has a spread so loose you'd expect the shotgun barrel to be shorter than the shotgun shell itself. SSG in the expansion felt good though.

doom3 stayed the same
you changed

Having the screen flip the fuck out whenever you get hit.

Eternal had great designs. I just wish they found a way to incorporate the Doom 3 pinky in some way.

I just wish their were more differences to them than literally just a colour swap for the torso and head, like if they scaled the sprite to be smaller, or adjusted/removed the horns or something

I can understand why the new Hell Knight doesn't appeal to you though, it is fairly featureless, but the musculature, body size, and posture of it just radiate brute strength to me, it made sense why they were the strongest regular enemy in Doom 3 because they were intimidating just by their stature

Too Dark

a design tweak in the direction you mentioned would have been interesting. instead we got a grey thing that could be a monster in any random horror game. the redesign also doesn't fit the name, because it looks like a non-sentient beast instead of some sort of demonic knight doing the bidding of an overlord
