Really? This is one of my all time favorite games, so I can't emphatize. What's your team? Party banter can make or break your run.

Not OP but I agree. The NPCs are so fucking terrible for the most part. Restarting with a fully custom party made the game 1000x better.

Going to play the two games for the first time, is there any builds that should be avoided or one that stands out?

In what way? Gameplay? That's more or less true, but you can solo the game with some crazy Kensai/Mage build and just keep them for the dialogue.

Min-maxed characters with inconsequential alignment, zero party banter and no comments on anything?
Why even play the game?

I've heard Monk builds in 1 are dogshit. magic builds are fun but start out very squishy as they do.

Paladin with 2h sword focus is a newbie friendly class that is still viable in the toughest parts of the game. You can also make unkillable hunter/priest with decent damage. Don't play a pure fighter. It's a strong but a very boring class.

Play Fighter or Berserker or even Dwarven Defender get dual Wielding to max then either Flays, Axes or War Hammers. You get a Age of flails that does almost ever element damage in the game in second one.
