It's not primarily for drainage, indoor portable units with the exhaust hose have an internal tank to empty intermittently. The reason for having the hot side outside is so the hot side is outside. Indoor portable units are trash, the 2 hose units are slightly better trash, but the idea of having the hot side inside is retarded. You are blowing room air across the hot side (condenser), room air you just cooled, to heat up the air and blow it outside, thus creating a vacuum and pulling in more hot outside are into your home through all the gaps, vents, and cracks. Another smaller benefit to having a non-retarded AC is it's slightly quieter inside with some of the noisy parts outside behind insulation.
