I want to discuss a philosophical idea...

I want to discuss a philosophical idea. A person said that you don't take other people's opinion of you to heart if you know it has nothing to do with you, and that it never does have anything to do with you. He said the only reason you would feel affected by it is if you agree that it does have something to do with you. Is he right? I've been thinking about this idea in relation to the Gospel and it seems to fit. Also I don't think it's limited to actual opinions other people have. Really it's more about your own mind, meaning the other person might not even have an opinion of you at all or know that you exist. For example if you are jealous of someone, the exact same concept applies.

Any more info? I googled but didn't find anything.

>it never does have anything to do with you.
Why doesn't it ever have anything to do with you? Sure, if something you want relies on someone's opinion of you, you'd care. And if something is at least partly true, you also care.

... you're not clear enough, there, Swedebro.

It's just an example, it doesn't have to be a true thing. It's more about your mind being affected by other people's opinion of you, even if they don't know you. I'm not saying it's right, just that it's a concept.

>Why doesn't it ever have anything to do with you?
Yeah that's what I'm struggling with. He didn't really explain it. He just said the world is like a hologram and we are really alone in our world, the other people aren't actually there, or not the actual them, just our version of them. I've been thinking about why it would never have anything to do with you and why he didn't explain it much. Maybe that aspect of this whole idea is actually not the key thing. Also, if you go out and murder some people at random and people hate you, does it have nothing to do with you? Also people's opinion of you and attitude towards you is not always just words or facial expressions etc. A judge's opinion of you can result in prison for life, or death in some places. Same applies to many other people, someone might kill you, fire you from your job etc. It seems the difference between someone pursing their lips or frowning at you and a country sending soldiers after you is just a matter of degree. Maybe it's about a faulty perception of how the world actually works, having these thoughts. I mean maybe things in your life never happen randomly, people you meet are never random, it's always God putting them in your way. Etc.
