well the idea is to stop the need for petrol everywhere, like we have now with filling stations encrusting the earth, and use electricity until more efficient renewables are secured

Hydrogen's great and it can be burned in much simpler engines thanks to modern environmental emissions standards. You have no idea what you're talking about. It can produce only water and CO2, you can burn it in a two stroke engine, a wenkel, etc. and not run afoul of modern emissions standards, enabling much smaller and simpler engines to re-enter the market.
