Nice animals if you are nice to them, but just like humans some can have bitchy personalities. A single horse requires a lot of care and work by itself, but as long as you keep it clean, keep it's stall clean and feed it enough it will stay healthy and strong. Even an average horse can be used for transportation and other types of manual work.
I used to work for a lady in Bulgaria who owned horses and it's much better than any other job I had.

My family ran a very successful stable for many years. The first poster is right, it's expensive, they eat a lot, need a lot of space and have constant farrier/vet needs. Actually having a horse though, riding around in open land, its pretty amazing. Its like bikers always looking down on car drivers because of the feel of the open road, or atv guys looking down on bikers because of pavement, with a horse you don't even need a trail, you can forge your own. Hunting with horses can be very cool too, in the hills for elk, trailing hounds for mountain lion. Horses are very different than one another as well, even moreso than dogs. Some are jokers, some are mean, some are completely apathetic, some are moody, some are *always* ethusiastic, you have to get to know them and it takes time to earn trust and build that bond. I love horses and if you have the space and money they can be amazing.
