We tried, multiple times. Even Putin tried, until he realized that all this "friendliness" bullshit spoonfed to Gorbachev and Yeltsin is only used by politicians and strategists to break Russia even further apart. EU, NATO and globohomo don't need an industrulialized nation, they need a lot of dependent and subservient shitholes like Ukraine.

Russia has talked about entering NATO three times if I am not mistaken. They were simply turned down. It was not a serious proposal but still, NATO has essentially denied even discussing possibility of Russia joining NATO.
