You are seeing the true nature of a large portion of the population. The word "sheep" gets used a lot but it describes them perfectly. They can't think. They won't think. They just want to live their lives on automatic mode.
A smaller proportion seem to be able to actually think independently and buck the flow.

And you can guaranteed this has been studied up the whazzoo by our elites for optimum population control.

Unfortunately most critical thinkers have no desire to do that as it's contrary to their core, myself included. The reality is we do need massive population reduction (read- thinning the herd) or else we're gonna have massive problems that are near impossible to solve. Much like you cant let your flock of cattle, goats, sheep, whatever analogy you want to use get too big or they eat all the food/destroy the pasture and all of them die.

The thing is that what we call npc are really just midwits. They're smart enough to ask questions but are simultaneously too stupid to understand the answer so what they're really looking for is an authority to validate their belief or tell them what to do. The "downloads" and "updates" we meme about are really just them parroting an authority figure they heard recently, usually on tv or social media.
Your co-workers don't think beyond it ending because they haven't been told to.
...and doing that will cause population collapse and ecological destruction. Farmers and shephards have literally known this for thousands of years. Don't believe me though, I'm sure you took biology class at some point in your life, what happens when a population of species in any ecosystem goes exponential for too long? The whole chain collapses.
