More lanes means more depedeny on cars because more lanes means less sidewalks and bikelanes/paths. Idealy, you want to reduce car dependency and make other modes of transportation more viable.
Basicaly, reduce the NEED to drive a car so that the only ones driving a car are the ones who WANT to drive a car (You?).

The plan is to get you out of the car and on foot so you cannot leave and take your tax money with you.
More lanes just make more traffic. Need more roads not more lanes. If you've driven through a big city with 8 lane highways all going to one exit you know what I'm talking about. More exits less traffic.

Personally I love driving but cannot stand traffic full of idiots who can't drive. I fully support providing alternative transportation methods as long as it doesn't become impossible to drive my car when I want to.
