For actual series with stories it's just pretty pathetic, honestly. I only self-insert with porn and usually prefer POV because for this reason why the fuck would you NOT want to be in the drivers seat? It isn't always. In the case of audience self-inserting It often implies a blank slate (aka poorly written) character. In the case of author self-inserting it almost always results in Mary Sues, which are VERY badly written characters that often ruin the story around them.
If a blank state character serves his purpose in a well written story, then that can be enjoyable. Additionally, if a well-defined character happens to be relatable to SOME audience members causing them to self-insert, then that is often a good thing.
So no, self-inserting is not always bad, context matters. Are you self inserting to a blank slate because he has no personality? Ok fine, but the story better be good to make up for a lack of character writing. Are you self inserting to a character who has actual qualities similar to you? Cool. Are you self inserting as an author to suck yourself off and make every other character love your stand-in? If so, fuck off.

It's not a bad thing but if you take it too seriously you'll start connecting yourself as the character too much and then might get disappointed for the wrong reasons when the character does something you would not do.

I just don't undertand what sort of dissociative disorder you would need to do that successfully.
