No idea
I used to think his whole violin-cello sound was made by some secret pedal no one could suss out, but it's not. That's just his touch.
Autism.
I wish he never tried to sing
He's inhumanly fast with a lot of touch. He's the only virtuoso/shredder I like.
I don't know how he was able to improvise that entire Trail of Tears performance without fucking up. He just knows exactly where to find every chord and every sound he wants in the moment. That's more impressive than his shredding. His music has a very unique vibe.

This. How does he cure my insomnia so quickly
I think you need to go listen to one of your lofi bedroom indie albums where the rotate the same three chords.
he was in legato mode and as soon as he tried to play anything melodic or slow it was jagged and otherwise not right
I've only seen half his cliffs of dover performance but it was pretty jarring
He's done a number on you.
Schizo
Does this sound jarring to you?

Ableist scum.

Really sums up EJ. On top of the articulate shred stuff, he can play fingerpicking very well, jazz influenced stuff, country, and pop. I think that's why he's less appreciated now than during the 80s-90s, because audiences are baffled when someone doesn't just stick to one rigid sound. I can't think of another guitar player like EJ who can do it all, and spent the time learning it all equally well.
His pedalboard wasn't working at that show. How can you be this new?
Holy shit
I'm referring to the performance you mistakingly embedded from austin texas that's also in the OP, his bluesy/melodic playing is jarring and they feel like segues to the next legato shreddy bit and it feels off to me
not hating, he is obviously one of the most accomplished guitarists in history but I've been recommended that performance a few times over the years on youtube because i'm a guitarfag myself and he looks like he's stuck in legato hell, like a mindset of sorts
it actually made it better
Great guitarist obviously, but he has a nice voice that worked really well on the poppier AOR stuff he did in the '80s.
in what way was it not working?
He's a god fearing type of guy, or at least was when he wrote Cliffs. Something about it being divine intervention or whatever, he said he never wrote any of Cliffs of Dover down on paper it just came to him like a hymn from god. I don't really buy the god stuff but dude was definitely influenced from being in church and hearing the music there throughout his childhood.
What show are you referring to? I want to hear

again, impressive as fuck
but once the songs starts it's like he's struggling to not play every line as fast as possible, especially in the chorus section
