These are honestly the two best books. They're old, outdated, and you probably can't directly apply everything anymore, but they're also short and the best, most concise explanations of programming (C is the language of the Gods) and Unix/Linux type operating systems. Learn things the right way and then go apply those lessons to whatever language / OS you end up using.
