My guess is... they simply refuse to acknowledge it. Living in denial. They perceive criticism (such as this) as an attack on their identity, and without their socially constructed consumer-driven identity, they would have an existential crisis. Convincing these fools that they're a product of the same institutions they hate, is enough to drive them mad, and so they double down and reject the reality of the situation.
