While they appear to have large cheat rings they actually dont, its just the way they lay on the fabric that makes it look that way. Not that it matters since as seen in the video a 7.62x39 will go right through the armored portion anyway.
I will probably do my own test on the AI tac plates I have using 5.56, pretty sure theyre just dead weight anyway.

The SL8 is very touchy to convert and should not be attempted by anyone who doesn’t know what they’re doing. You have to remove a very very fine amount of material from the receiver. That said, something like this (ACR stock on a Hera SL8 lower) is way more comfortable than a real 36. The only real advantage the actual 36 offers, in my opinion, is the ability to go rock ‘n roll easily.

Stay away from Canadian made plates, they often are reskins of Chinese armor. Only nice brand I've heard of is plates from Milburn Mountain Defense, and maybe, maybe, Aratech plates. Although those MMD plates only have a couple models on the CPL I think and not all of them are in stock, or level IV, least when I was looking a year ago for plates. Not sure about Aratech but I doubt they have a CPL listing. Canarmor and AITactical most likely doesn't. Generally speaking, Europe is the only haven for armor for Canadians. Varusteleka also sells Hesco plates up to NIJ level III (level IVs too spicy for export outside US), though I'd check the CPL for the right models since some Hesco plates failed FIIT testing (Follow up Inspection Test).
Not sure, but last I remember, they're undergoing private tests with the DOD. No news on the official NIJ tests but I'll get back to you
Also if you check the ballistic test results for whatever plates you come across, much less for this, you should note that there's only a handful of certified test labs for NIJ certification. All other labs are unofficial, make of that what you will. These guys asked Bosik Technologies to "certify" their plates... never heard of em.

then you are good to go. plates are not complicated. they have a ceramic tile to break the bullet and dissipate energy then they have a fiber weave made of glass or kevlar to catch it. thats it. its not magic. if you want some extra peace of mind then weigh theplate and compare it to the weight of the nij eqivalent if it is close you are good to go

On what do you base that claim? Their plates aren't NIJ certified, as far as I'm aware. As for Aratech, trust in them is based on the fact that they're the same company that made the Hyperlight plates a few years ago which are NIJ certified (they were made for a RCMP purchase order) before being bought by S&J. Changing hands means that they lost their certification, and S&J have been "waiting for certification" of their Aratechs for a while so that's the leap of faith aspect of buying them.
There's a reputable shop in Simcoe County that I'd trust any gun work to.

Ceramic plates do have a "best before" date because they degrade over time. That being said, I don't think anyone really knows how much they're affected by this. They'll most likely still stop what they're rated to stop.

They tend to expire because they expect the plates to see regular use. Cops standing in the rain, getting puked and bled on will eventually wear down the armour. Same with military; if the armour is getting submerged in water they may scrap it long before its expiration. If you're keeping it in good condition while you slice the pie in mom's basement, it will last long after its expiry.
