The EU and NATO as a whole will continue to cripple their own economies, so long as the war in Ukraine wages on. Western nations will continue to sanction Russia, and be cut-off from energy supplies, as well as lend vast amounts of financial support to Ukraine. This has devastating impacts on the socio-economic integrity of western nations. Prices go up, energy infrastructure is hindered, living standards go down, and so on. Enough of this will send western nations into social, political and economic failure. Russia, meanwhile, has been submitting itself to Chinese and Indian markets, and has practically retained from its previous economic disaster. Russia is a relatively stable nation, with great amounts of military power remaining.
It is within the interest of Russia to keep this war going for as long as possible. Russia may just in fact want to constantly give Ukraine a taste of victory. Putin knows he is driving the west into a willing economic suicide. You really though that Putin was stupid? After all his political strategy and his rise to power, you really thought he doesn't know what he is doing? This is a calculated man and a political genius. He is softening the west up for something later down the line.

Putin can't sell Russian gas, and Russian economy is barely surviving because it's a dictatorship and not all facts are made public. Capital is fleeing the country. Russia is forced to rely more and more on China and China has claims on her own on Russian territory. NATO and EU was united when they were pretty much brain dead before. His only chance is stopping the invasion or cause problems to EU, but he does that because he is losing. He wanted a quick invasion, and now he is forced to maintain a costly invasion - where many Russians are lost - and with the US forcing him to pay heavier and heavier price. Not to mention that he tried to destabilize the EU and the US before. This is not 4D chess, he fucked up. He is losing to Ukraine for fucks sake.
