At the time it was my first exposure to meme humour and id die laughing scrolling the ylyl pages. Rage comics started here, fucking side splitting. But internet humour has evolved so much since then. That shits like Watching charlie chaplin now. Dated and boring.
As far as the people, it got worse pretty much on par with social media in general. People, especially the young generation who had Facebook and smart phones in highschool, got more insufferable.
2015 when trump started was a definite turning point in the world. The mass use of political advertising on social media fucked everyone up.
As a well educated person who was actually formally trained in critical thinking in an actual academic setting, many of you have no actual idea how full of shit you are. So that was rhe real downhill. Everything became political shit posting and porn because the new kids dopamine receptors were burnt tf out by tablet overuse during key developmental years and politically supercharged by their respective echo chambers.(

things have become far more politically inundated. that goes for the wider internet in general too.
there are far more shills than in the past, usually trying to achieve certain political/psychological/data mining goals.
trolling was far more individualistic in the past. there usually wasn't a wider goal for that individual as much. just posts for keks and lulz
probably the most important thing - there weren't nearly as many bot threads. this goes hand in hand with the shills. coded bots and their machine learning/ai-tech are far improved. it's far easier to inundate a board with endless bait threads, porn, demoralization, etc when you don't have to hire individuals to do it and just rely on a gpt-type bot to do what you will. just need a couple people, the bots, and you can dominate a slow board rather easily. even easier if the moderation/jannies are subverted.
those shill/bait threads are the only threads that get views or responses. they fill the board slowly. others start mimicking that posting style as a result in a case of monkey see - monkey do. soon everyone becomes useful idiots, perpetuating topics of discussion and narratives as dictated by the shills and their endless bots and posting scripts. that's led to the gradual degradation of every board, and now the users help in their destruction as well.
