7z because it has the best results.

I'm not poor so I pay for iCloud, no need to compress anything when you have the cloud.

tar.gz
or zip

why tar.gz/zip over 7z?

Surprisingly, 7zip archives created with PeaZip have better compression ratio than archives created with 7zip original software. Example: Folder with "lot" of redundant DLL files: source: 500MB

archive.7z compressed with 7-zip, "Ultra" compression level: 58MB

archive.7z compressed with PeaZip, "Extreme compression, 7Z Ultra": 31MB

About 2x better compression ratio with same standard (7z) format. Worth a try!

Lonox.

Who cares owner and group is a massive pain in the ass on Linux.

Speaking of, what is the best (GUI)archive program for Linux?

PeaZip is a nightmare to use. And Gnome's useless one built into Nautilus can't even open password protected 7z files.

Thank you for reposting as png

7z because it werks on both windows and gnu+linux

RAR3
It offers the best compromise between compression ratio, speed and backwards compatibility

.tar, nothing fancy

sqlar

Do people actually compress their files?

thank you very much for this info

.tar saves the settings right?

Ark

>PeaZip is a nightmare to use.
No it is not.

.hc
because it preserves the features of the filesystem, for example I use EFS on NTFS machines and that is preserved

afaik .tar does this too
