a long, long time ago, before moot had had enough and fucked off to who-knows where, there was a japanese image/textboard called 2chan, there's another one called 2ch but no one cares about 2ch
some teenager with an internet connection decided to fork the source code for it and here we are

Many will lie to you here. But the truth is that it's 4 channels. 4 boards. It has expanded to more boards as of late but it used to be just 4, hence the name

No it wasn't. It was originally two boards - Any Forums for anime and Japanese culture, Any Forums for everything else.
It's a play on 2ch/2chan which were named after TV channel 2.
The software that powered those boards is called "futaba" (two leaves), so m00t called his fork "yotsuba" (four leaves).
