What's the difference between a therapist and psychiatrist? Going to see a psychiatrist today for first time for what I claim is "being socially stunted" spent most my teen-adult years isolated playing vidya. Have been self improving with solid workout routine and diet but wanna get my head right, will be refusing any medication. Please help me out here with how to go about this, what to expect, and what not to do/say.

A talk therapist is far better than an old school kike shrink, that will do nothing except dope you up. Having an ex with a mother with full blown John Nash tier schizophrenia, I can safely say psychiatric is a quack medicine. They know nothing about how the brain works.

I figure it wouldn't do me any bad, I'll just refuse medication and move to a therapist

a psychiatrist only prescribes medicine.

psych is a doctor that diagnoses.
therapist is the specialist you see for treatment

Psychiatrist will spend 15 minutes with you and prescribe chemicals. Therapist will spend an hour with you and help you understand your issue(s). Psychiatrists rarely give a shit about their patients. It's all about the paycheck. Therapists tend to invest more time so that you can treat yourself without putting shit in your bloodstream. People tend to reflect positively on their therapy and negatively on their dependencies. So unless you know exactly what is wrong, and that it can be remedied with specific drugs, you're better off talking to a professional rather than starting with a person who gets commissions on chemical scripts.

Therapists are doctors too. They're doctors of Psychology. And they diagnose people all the time. They just don't try to fix every issue with a bottle of pills lol

Would you say seeing this psychiatrist would be a waste of time?

Therapist = gives a shit (or is supposed to)

Psychiatrist = MD that failed or couldn't get into a residency program, kek

is therapist and psychologist the same?

Psychiatrists are MDs and went to med school too. It’s not like dentistry.

The most effective treatment for a lot of psychological issues is a combination of counseling and medication. Often medication is needed simply for counseling to even be effective.
What’s the point of seeing a therapist to work through past trauma if you’re freaking out because the walls are melting or you think you’re the king of Antarctica.

For some issues like depression and anxiety, medication is a splint. It gets you on your feet so you can work through your issues and sometimes, and not all the time, later you can take off the splint to stand and walk on your own.

i just want someone to talk to and to guide me appropriately as i had no father figure and was bullied by my dad, sisters, and classmates. I have no friends and am focused on self improvement (diet and solid workout routine) I have no friends and just want to fix my head without medication, i'm open to hear what the dr will say and ask me

A therapist isn’t qualified. A psychologist is larping after they got a degree and had Biden knock 10k off it

One is the rapist and one is not

A psychologist is a therapist with a PhD.

a psychiatrist actually goes to med school and can prescribe meds, a therapist cannot, and may or may not even have certifications I believe

so when calling my main doctor for recommendations i should specify i want a psychologist (not therapist)?

just to be clear, a psychologist is not the same as a psychiatrist, don't mix the terms up

Unironically join a club. RC planes, board games, golf. Anything that can get you into contact with people similar interests and can mentor you.

Therapists are ok imo, your mileage may very, but paying someone just to talk to them didn't do it for me.

Therapists are like nurses, psychiatrists are like doctors. Some therapists can prescribe pills. Psychiatrist is a MD and therapist is a Master’s degree.

>psychologist is not the same as a psychiatrist
i understand this, i'm seeing a psychiatrist tomorrow just to see how it goes but it seems like it might be a waste of time and i should be seeing a psychiatrist. either way insurance is covering my session tomorrow so fuck it.
my current ways of finding peace in life is hiking and frequenting my local pool hall. Would be nice talking to someone that can help me develop my social skills a bit better because i am miserable and lonely.

>it might be a waste of time and i should be seeing a psychiatrist
psychologist* my bad

I'm not an expert in any sense, but from my understanding it can take visits with multiple therapists/psychiatrists until you find one that is a good fit for you as well

Hey, it doesn't hurt to try. While your at the psych ask if they have any numbers to good therapists, they all know each other.

>will be refusing any medication.
Good. You should also demand evidence that whatever brain-destroying bullshit they give you actually works, and not some half-assed fraudulent modeling financed by the manufacturer

>While your at the psych ask if they have any numbers to good therapists
the psych won't claim that i'd be better off staying so that they could keep getting my money? seems like an odd thing to ask

>therapist and psychiatrist?
Therapists generally don't have above a bachelor's in psychology and are usually just "social workers" technically and psychiatrists typically have a masters and go more in depth. A therapist is better imo they're more human acting and less analytical

but a psychiatrist has more experience and might be able to spot things a therapist can't right?

Most doctors do want to help people. They'll access you and see what they can do for you, if they think they can help they'll probably want you back. It's on insurance, fuck it lol.
