I have cousin on the sex offender registry.
Short version, he was like 20 something at a party. He met some girl and they fucked. She invited other people to watch. So this guy was fucking her while her friends watched.
Well, turns out she was 14. He didn't know. But the problem was a lot of people saw it so he didn't have an alibi and got arrested.
Nobody cared that a 14 shouldn't have been at an adult party.
Nobody cared that he didn't know.
Nobody cared that she lied to him.
Nobody cared that she refused to testify.
So homie went to jail. The judge made some big sanctimonious speech about how this dude was subhuman trash. He had to go into protective custody (punk tank) and mandatory sex offender counseling. People fucked with him in jail pretty hard -- guards and inmates. He served 6 months and got put on probation.
He hasn't worked a real job since. His mom pays for his trailer and groceries. When she dies he's fucked. He does some DJing on the side and stuff (because it doesn't require a background check), but it basically ruined his life. He can't live in certain places, barely anyone wants to rent to him, his job prospects are non-existent.
All because he hooked up at a party.

That said punishment of the SO registry is giga fucked for exactly what happened to him. I don't see why he can't put more effort into lying his ass off in a remote-work job though. I call bullshit for two reasons. 1. It's a party and you basically never ID someone before you hook up with them. You wouldn't even do that on Tinder. Nobody does that. It's stupid.
Secondly, "kids should be expected to act dumb" because we expect them to be that way. My parents would have never tolerated me doing that shit. Something about sex just shuts people's brains off in this country and they go apeshit. If a kid gets caught drinking underaged everyone pisses and moans about how they're a bad kid. They beat his ass. Killing / beating up a sex offender is a badge of honor for your reputation in jail/prison. For some of those guys, it's all they have.

But yes, you can be turned away from renting and home ownership. There's more to his story that I didn't share -- namely social isolation. People posted publicly about it on facebook. People shared his pictures on the registry. People made longwinded posts about how they "always knew" or whatever. He's not invited to family reunions anymore.
In fact, I was in a college class and during a presentation, someone just put in another student's sex offender profile page up and actively presented on it right in the class. People were screaming and laughing and running out of the classroom.
It's basically being on the "official bad people's list" and people are publicly entitled to fuck with you.
