This really. Discord became big enough and popular enough that it's rapidly replacing other avenues of discourse for communities. Sure, Mumble, Vent, Teamspeak, Skype, and IRC were popular years ago but look at where we are now. Fucking /vg/ threads advertising their discord for people to go and discuss the games in. I rarely recall seeing the other server types advertised in the OP before discord. MMO guilds almost always have a discord server and some make joining them mandatory, with a lot of communication happening in these servers rather than in game. I look at it in the same way as everything and everyone expecting you to look up a wiki or guide for doing things in games rather than organically learning it yourself or finding someone in the game to help guide you and forming a friendship along the way. The entire internet has just become really impersonal and too fast paced / impatient.

Discord is like concentrated, monolithic cancer. It enables the worst social aspects out of people by exploiting human tribalistic behavior. The vast majority of Discord servers end up dominated by a small clique, usually with one or two super-egotistical sociopaths at the top. Every Discord server has a 'core' group of fruitcakes who are up each others ass. The type of people who set up Discord servers are usually people who like to social climb and accumulate "friends", or more truthfully, petty social power over other people. Discord is particularly bad because it's designed for superficial people and for superficial conversation. It may have served a purpose when it came to gaming, but when it comes to socialising and communicating in general, it's worthless. It's designed to encourage short, forgettable conversation based on nothing, it's corporatized and all logs are saved forever. It filters out anyone with a healthy dose of rebelliousness or spirit. This is why Discord is cancer. It's literally the opposite of what Any Forums was. It gives names, faces, and egoes to people who are SUPPOSED to be anonymous. Imo the problem became more apparent when discord came around because vent and ts chats were way more scuffed by comparison. People used them for ingame voice comm but it never supplanted ingame chat. Few people had multimonitor setups, and fewer still would bother alt tabbing to use alternative chat mediums. Now discord integrates with video games, people have sixty monitors, and overall it has more and more gotten to the point where loads of communities simply dont communicate ingame which makes them feel very insular.

Discord can be personal, you can make really strong friendships using the program (rather easily even). You just have to try, like all avenues of life.
And then? Once you have a friend group?
Just make a discord server or message group and you'll avoid all your discord bogeymans that you fear so much for no reason.
