It actually goes back further than that, but that's when shit really started to reach critical mass. There is a glaring flaw in our system where rural less populated areas are far more heavily weighed than urban populous areas. This had the effect of skewing things republican in general, but that in addition to gerrymandering makes it all but a certainty in many states.
And since 2020 most red states are not making the same mistake they made in 2020 of having principled people or pesky laws in the way of simply throwing out votes. They've legislated that they have ultimate authority if they count votes or not, meaning if its a republican majority legislature in the state, which most are, they can toss it if dems win, declare "questions about fraud", and then vote the republican the winner.
