Before torrents we were downloading shit from XDCC bots running on hacked machines. I only used p2p for downloading older music that was hard to find on IRC. I could go to vcdquality.com and see screenshots and reviews of all the latest pirated copies of movies. If they said it was good I would try to find it on IRC. I downloaded full albums, games, cracked software, porn, all kinds of shit really this way. Burning movies onto CD-Rs in SVCD format to watch on my DVD player. Swapping discs half way through. Later on I joined scene groups and had access to topsites filled with everything you could possibly want. I was downloading xbox games and dvdr movies on my shitty 3mbit connection. Good times. Later on I found private torrent trackers and was an early adopter of them. Used ratiomaster to cheat on bitsoup.org and also gave my friends cheated accounts to use. Now I'm on all the good ones like HDB, BTN, PTP etc.

The only truly good public tracker is rarbg. It sources it's content from private trackers. It doesn't allow user uploads. For private trackers you can't get on the best ones anymore. General trackers might fill your needs though depending on what you're into.
