I'm an oldfag who has completely ignored the smart home meme this whole entire time, but I was looking at battlestations/setups recently and those small displays caught my attention. Turned out one of the things I saw was called the Amazon Echo Show. Are these any good? I'm interested in getting one as they're just $60 or so, but what neat things can I do with them besides display photos and some smart homey widgets?

Amazon is zogshit
just roll your own home server and run your apps that way baka
go scour the home assistant forums, most of the people on here live in pods and have little more than 3 outlets and 2 light sockets to automate
Seems like it was the Echo Show 8 that I saw that caught my eye, smaller than the one in OP pic
Where am I going to get a mini display that I dont have to duct tape down to my table then?
netbook?
3M command strip the device?
>oldfag who has completely ignored the smart home meme
you should consider yourself blessed
if you're oldfag you know that ignorance is bliss
>netbook
It isn't 2010 anymore user

or fuck slap any android device there and call it a day
I don't see the fucking use case because it's just more tracking
I have two smart devices - an air conditioner and an air purifier. I do not know why something else "smart" is needed.
> you should consider yourself blessed
I don't understand why all this is necessary. I have a fewsmart sockets, but I couldn't think of anything smarter than connecting them to the network in order to turn off the computer if it turns on when I'm not at home. I use another plug to control towel radiator, also in the summer in my country usually hot water turned off for 3 weeks, so I have a water heater, I also control it with a smart plug.
>smart home
must not have
checked, best post
>I do not know why something else "smart" is needed.
Smart devices are never "needed", it's just a matter of QoL. for example I have smart lights that auto dim in the late evening and slowly brighten from 0%-100% over the span of 10 min in the morning after my alarm goes off. It just makes life the smallest bit more convenient.
and what did you give in return?
> matter of QoL
"smart" lighting costs nothing.
> auto dim in the late evening and slowly brighten from 0%-100% over the span of 10 min in the morning after my alarm goes off
It's inconvenient for me. Do you like to lie in bed after waking up?
yeh, the new apple tv 4k so you are ready for matter devices.
then you wait for matter devices.
I really dont want to get one that will be a source of heat and/or noise, plus I don't need that keyboard/whole computer. I already have 2 laptops + 1 desktop lol.
Using an old phone might be a convenient option, only I don't have any old phones right now - much less an old Android one.
whatever it is, just be sure to install your own bootloader so you're not stuck in some zog appstore prison, that's all I'm asking.
wtf is matter?
ok whats the preferred one for these to get rid of the bezos off them?
gotta check those android developer forums for the exploit to put your own shit on these and when they are new nobody has written one for a little while.
I hate IoT with a passion, so please excuse me.
