Why

He most likely had gender dysphoria. He likely wanted to come out as transgender, but your lack of support and blatant transphobia towards him and the pressure of having to maintain his toxic masculinity as your 'father figure' probably drove him away so he could start fresh as the person he was always meant to be (a woman).
I would suggest that you begin transitioning yourself, and make sure he knows about it. Maybe then you can both make amends.
