The phrase is entirely made up. Those familiar with Schweitzer's work speak of an "outrageously inaccurate picture" of his view of Africa.

FACTS: More than 100 years ago, the Franco-German physician and theologian Albert Schweitzer left Europe to help the sick and needy in Africa. In 1913 he established a hospital in Lambaréné, a town in what was then French Equatorial Africa. Schweitzer died there in 1965 at the age of 90. He has written autobiographical books about his work in Africa.

For years, it has been falsely spread on the Internet that Schweitzer used the word "sub-race" for inhabitants of the continent. In his book African Stories, originally published in German in 1938, he is said to have written: "They have neither the intellectual, spiritual, or psychic abilities to equate with or share with white men in any function of our civilization." In addition, Africans would "destroy all their work".

There is no such quotation in Schweitzer's book "African Stories". Years ago, former President of the International Foundation for the Albert Schweitzer Hospital, Lachlan Forrow, declared: "This quote is completely false and an outrageously inaccurate portrayal of Dr. Schweitzer's view of the Africans.» The doctor never remotely said or wrote such sentences.

The assessment of the Harvard doctor Forrow comes from a document from the Albert Schweitzer House in Gunsbach, France, which is available to the German Press Agency (dpa).

The English version "From My African Notebook" from 1961 (sometimes also from 1951) is often referred to as the source for the wrong quote from Schweitzer. The text by the translator Charles E. B. Russell was first published in 1939 and went through several editions in the years that followed. It is supposed to say: "They have neither the intellectual, mental or emotional abilities to equate or share in any of the functions of our civilization." But in the book the words "intellectual", "mental" or "emotional" do not appear at all.

When asked by the dpa on September 11, 2019, the director of the Albert Schweitzer House in Gunsbach, France, Jenny Litzelmann, explained her assessment of the quote: "For me it is clearly about the use of the "Schweitzer aura" for dishonest purposes and propaganda .»

According to the South African politics professor Christi van der Westhuizen in 2008, the wrong quote has been around for a long time. Accordingly, it appeared around June 1981 in a South African newspaper that has since been discontinued. According to the scientist, it shows "how racists cling to certain discourses and spread them thoughtlessly for decades".
