ARs are kinda overrated anyways. I think you can get a Mini-14 chambered in 5.56 instead if you really want a rifle in that caliber, and the mag wont be fixed.
I personally have several .22LR rifles, an M1 Carbine reproduction, 12ga shotgun and a 9mm handgun and thats all I really need although I kinda want a .357 Magnum revolver

If it was made/purchased prior to the ban then it is exempt as far as I am aware. I know long arms purchased prior to 2014 do not need to be registered, but without a firearm to your name buying ammo becomes a much more tedius process (you need the full 10 day eligibility check instead of the regular time-of-purchase one)

You should wait until the recent Supreme court dust settles and then get one uncucked (might take a year or two) or do what I did and buy a mini-30 or mini-14 instead. 10 round removable mags, legal and fun.
