Optic fiber. If download speeds via cable are limited ( because the only alternative is copper ) the only way for internet to reach high speeds is via satellites. Boosting laser/opti communications technology and leading to both less internet ( because satellites are expensive ) and a more futuristic world ( because there would be more satellites ).
