Is anyone else re-adopting old media and technology because they enjoy actually owning things and not being permanently connected to the Internet and spied on / bombarded with ads?
Is anyone else re-adopting old media and technology because they enjoy actually owning things and not being permanently...
>using old shit tech that barely works
>not just having a 50TB RAID1+0 array
>Is anyone else re-adopting obsolete storage devices because of a retro tech youtuber made it look cool?
FTFY
I want local no-DRM copies of things for that reason, but I see no reason to use the old physical media formats. Especially VHS, which I maintain is only fun for zoomers who never had to deal with it when it was current technology, rather than people who used it in the past because that's all there was.
Remember tape rewinders?
Bad times, man. Bad times. Nobody who was actually there would actually want to fucking go back to that.
Yes I torrent films and shows then burn them to DVDs to watch and store, or I buy them if I can actually find a place that sells every episode of Sharpe in a box set which is not that many places apparently.
Overall the past several years I've built a sizeable collection of VHS tapes, Cassettes, and Vinyl Records. CD's are fragile crap, and I have no desire to own them.
CDs are not retro yet. Give it 10 years and you'll be collecting them
Not interested in being trendy, thanks. I'm too old to care about being cool.
>CDs are not retro yet.
I have CDs from the 1980s that belonged to my mum. I still buy CDs today because I like having hard copies and I can rip them as I like.
>fragile
CD is the only format you listed that doesn't wear out just by playing.
I've been collecting cassettes for a while, my only good tape deck broke though and I'm terrified of getting another one that'll eat my tapes. I'm thinking of starting to collect cd's, that way I can at least back up the music to my collection.
Besides that I started buying dvd's to rip as well to store digitally.
open deck player. you'll need to transfer the tape on to another reel though
I have a modest collection of Citypop LPs. Like a lot of folks I enjoy the tactile experience of records, though I mostly listen to my digital collection. I still buy CDs occasionally if it's a local band or I can't find a FLAC download online.
I've never understood the nostalgia for tape, it was never good... maybe because I never bought pre-recorded music on cassette. I only made mixtapes from radio and CDs before I got my first Discman. I did service my dad's tape deck recently, the machine I used to make those mixtapes. They had some pretty fancy decks back then.
You don't need to add old technologies for that.
I have a computer that boots into Kodi to watch movies.
Also a Thinkpad x200 that has nothing but foobar2000 and my music library to listen to music and nothing else.
It's multitasking that you have to fight, not newer tech.
I'll have to look into good models for these, thanks for the starting point.
I just like collecting music, I have mostly tapes but also a some records and a few cd's. For me it's mostly novelty. Sometimes I like listening to them though just to hear how it sounds on the medium. Like how some people swear by CRT's. I don't think it's the best by far, but it's definitely unique.
I use cassettes because my car cannot play CDs
>>using old shit tech that barely works
Theoretically the CD and audio CD are peak tech since they have everything including random search. However slash like pen drives and SD take the cake.
After going through my parents' VHS collection and recording anything worth saving I can firmly say: fuck VHS. Too many points of failure between the VCR and tape itself.
>he actually uses fragile and obsolete technology with increasingly scarce parts (likely purchased at a premium) instead of just pirating 4k HDR rips and putting them on a local server
no thanks
Tape ages badly, but a good condition tape with a low play count sounds amazing. The sound is rich and smooth, for music which was mastered on analog, tape is the purest copy you can get. Of course it must be said, that digitally sourced tape is pointless.
