There are highly effective and specialized martial arts out there fit for that very purpose, such as Krav Maga, Systema, and Wing Chun. There is simply NO need to murder someone when defending yourself.

Second, Martial arts will make it worse, especially if the other person has a gun. First it will make you think you can take your opponent when you cant. It takes far less time to pull a trigger than it does to execute any martial art agains the gun or assailant.
