Critical thinking and the ability to calculate long term consequences are definitely correlated with age though. And the line has to be somewhere. We hopefully would agree that an infant can't give consent. So somewhere between there and death, the line has to be drawn. The law must apply equally to everyone. We can't just trust a child who says they're mature enough to make their own decisions. There would literally be millions more kids either dead or sold into human trafficking. Now, there are probably some people under that line who actually would probably be fine if the line wasn't there. But there are also a number of people who absolutely need it to be there, and would probably even benefit from it being raised. So we picked 18. Or 16 in some places. Or lower in others. But nothing can justify true, clinical pedophilia.
