any farmers here? do you carry out any "sustainable" farming practices or are they too costly?

Sustainable farming isn't "costly" if you're talking about upfront costs, but you do have to accept a lower yield. For example tilling the soil is actually terrible for the environment and not vital to crop growth but it does improve the yield.

I've converted my entire lawn and backyard to gardens. Mostly onions, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbages, and peppers. I also got a chicken coop but it's illegal because the northern anglo culture is disgusting so I can't have a rooster or more than 4 chickens.

The soil in my front yard is very alkaline, and anything I planted would likely be stolen. I think the soil in my back yard is contaminated with arsenic.
I do plan to move out to some rural property in the next 5-7 years, though.
