Actually the nurses are more in touch with the patients than the doctors. The doctor makes the calls but it's the nurse checking on you several times per day. And usually nurses have much more human feelings in them than doctors. Surgeons especially feel like they're working on machines rather than people.

regional specific aliments are a thing because the whole town is exposed to the same bad crap, anything unuasual or different requires odd tests that the lab would fuck up or cause pain so as a general it is a better idea to recommend a specialist.
