8GB is pretty much the bare minimum for an x86 desktop these days.

windows 11 needs 10gb of RAM just to boot

a lot of anons would tell you that it's not, i wouldn't say that 8 is more than enough but 8 would give you a smooth enough of an experience with not too long of waiting times on programs, i would say it's enough for a good CSGO experience as well as maybe games like LOL and maybe some battle royale games of sorts.. web browsing ironically enough would choke a little, maybe use something that is not chromium based

windows 11 is shit lmao

>writing windows ui in electron is le bad because... because it just is ok?

8 gigs is fine for a desktop just don't turn off swap or you might lock up when you got to many porno tabs

I used 8 gigs for a long time, only recently expanded to 24. for context the machine I use it on is windows 7. newer OS means more bloat, so you'll need more RAM.
that said, idk of any situation where the price difference between 8g and 16g is so extreme as to not just go the extra mile for 16. it's more comfortable now and more future proof as software bloat continues to grow

I'm using 8gb and it's fine for the majority of things that i do. But i encountered some bottlenecks:
> any game made after 2014 will run out of memory
> can't use all 24 threads on 7zip because of ram
> rimworld 1.3 doesn't even load with mods, 1.2 is fine but have to close most programs before playing it
> emulation up to ps2 is great, didn't test ps3 and switch yet
16gb is indeed minimum if you're a gaymer and work on your pc

Ideally you don't do all that at the same time but it shouldn't be too bad if you have an SSD, it gets used as swap when you run low on free memory
Also like pointed out you can avoid using electron-based apps like Discord and Slack since they are memory hogs, it's like having another chrome browser open in the background

I'm using a system with 1gb of ram and it works, albeit slowly, for browsing. It actually plays games better than browsing (warcraft 2 and half-life). It runs openoffice just fine, so I imagine any version of MS office should work just as well.

So yeah, 8gb is more than enough.

8 gigs is overkill for source engine games. It wouldn't even bottleneck at 4 gigs.

what resolution are you running games at? I don't think I've ever used more than 6 gigs at any given time, even with stuff like doom 4 at max settings.

>web browsing
128 GB is not enough for web browsing.

Yes as long as you don't use Winbloat 11

720p. I play mostly games with mods, so lack of ram is a serious bottleneck.

Depends how much web you browse.

The minimum capacity for DDR5 is gonna be a single 8 GB stick, so 16 GB for a pair. Basically memory requirements are gonna double this generation, so 8 GB won't be enough. Sorry pal.

You can still live on 2 gigs with your use case.
8 is enough for running any system for any day to day tasks, except muh heavy gaming or special programs like 3d stuff.

I mean that sounds more like bad programming on the part of the modders. I've played a lot of modded games like EAW, Minecraft, and Fallout NV and I've never had problems with ram.

It's "enough".

nigga i'm still using 4 gigs of ram

>Minecraft
>never had problems with ram

I have a dell optiplex 755, core 2 quad with 8gb of ram, that I play with on the side. It runs devuan with window maker and yes its fine for web browsing and other similar tasks. you can even play 1080p video on a second monitor without issue and it has a shit nvs 510 for a graphics card.
just avoid modern desktop environments and you will be fine
