i use a messenger bag with a separate laptop sleeve. having a dedicated, padded section for a laptop in the bag usually distorts the bag internals and greatly reduces the volume versus a separate sleeve.
I use an attache case 'cause I'm a grown man.
I gorilla glued some buckling web straps to the interior of the side that goes against my back, they hold the laptop in place. I could get caught in a total downpour and it would be fine.

It was the only way to get one to show in results with a single strap and enough pockets but that also wasn't bigger than necessary.

I'm looking for something really durable and water resistant. I use it to transport my laptop to and from work on my motorcycle. Ideally it should pack down small.
