Literally all of these terms are made derogatory as a means of policing white thought and expression. There was never a native convention where they all decided that red was an unacceptable term, the media simply made it so to control the speech of anyone (or at least anyone white) using it. The same goes for terms like colored, negro, oriental, midget etc. It's just a way to exclude those who aren't along with the program from public discourse.
