Bear in mind the Democratic Party is controlled by a handful of old people -- Pelosi and her gang. Things that they think are good ideas are what goes, even if it's actually an incredibly stupid idea that only makes sense if you were born in the 1940s. The whole "russian collusion" shitshow only makes sense if you're a boomer. People in their 20s just think of Russia as a funny place that generates a lot of dashcam videos and bad porn. It has never been "The Enemy" to them. But Russian collusion is what the Dems went with because it made perfect sense to the boomers who run the party.
Trump is easier to explain. The American people want "an outsider". They are tired of "the establishment". Obama was sold as an outsider (even though he literally was the establishment) and for 8 years he did jack shit so that alone virtually guaranteed Republican victory in 2016 regardless of who they ran. And Trump, being the clear outsider (from a "political establishment" standpoint at least) was the obvious choice.
This caused the Democrats (who, again, are run by boomers) to run a pure anti-Trump campaign and push Biden (an obvious establishment nutjob) as the candidate of choice. That Biden was unpopular was never really a problem because the entire game was "anti-Trump". They didn't have time enough to warm up the engine for the 2016 run but the spent the next 4 years revving that bad boy to maximum RPMs and convinced left wing voters that "anyone is better than Trump" which is how we got saddled with Biden.
Bad choice, though, because if Trump runs again in 2024 he will surely win. The only way I see Trump losing in 2024 is if another dark horse shows up on the Republican side and presents himself as a better outsider.
Democrats won't get any outsiders through their primaries because their primaries are much more tightly controlled by the party.
