Patriotism is a declaration of allegiance and the pledge of allegiance is a declaration of unification at the very least within the classroom. Its a ceremonious practice of routine and historic acknowledgement.

In europe its common that, yes, you might sing the anthem a few times, but you only pledge allegiance when you are conscripted to the army, even then only once and only after you finish the boot camp.
