What are some small but useful skills to learn

Basic troubleshooting of home appliances.

eg: In most home washing machines (Top Loaders) a failure of the door switch will prevent the washer from draining and running the spin cycle. It -seems- like a major issue, caused by a $10 part that is easily bypassed.

eg 2: Fridge not staying cold, sides of the cabinet feel warm? Check the condenser fan underneath the unit. Common failure point and easily fixed. Found one that had a mouse caught in the blades.

Stuff like this can save you hundreds of dollars in parts and THOUSANDS in labor

Rent one. The hardest part of driving a stick is getting it moving from a standing start. Find an empty parking lot and just start moving. shift up one, shift back down, stop. Repeat until you can do it without killing the engine.

Pro Tip: To start with the vehicle facing uphill -without- rolling backwards, with your foot on the brake, ease off the clutch until the engine wants to move the car, -then-let off the brake and add power with the gas.

The average driver can learn this in a day. Practicing with a car you drive often just makes it easier to do without thinking.
