Because the commercially available stock of 5.56 and .223 ammunition has a reduced velocity compared to their military grade counterparts, it generally can't penetrate higher levels of body armor protection such as that used by our actual armed forces. Level III it gets through no problem, level V? No chance.

Commercially available .308 ammunition does not have this problem. That's why you should upgrade to the AR-10 tactical! You heard it here first folks, the same platform you know and love now with a big boy cartridge!

Civilian available 6.5 Creedmoor will *probably* have *similar* capabilities, but I'm not holding my breath and good luck buying it in bulk. Firearms chambered in .308 can also use 7.62x51mm NATO, so in any kind of shit hitting the fan scenario it would be your best bet.

No they don't. Some of the most common 5.56 ammo on the market is just straight up military surplus.

Armor plates are literally specifically designated based on their ability to stop .30 caliber full power rifle threats. .308 is exactly what they stop, and is what they are built to stop from the ground up.
