I'm not one who thinks comedy should be 'inclusive' as in 'constantly uplifting, empowering, showcasing stunning and brave' or whatever PC bollocks, but inclusive comedy means something the group being dunked on (or the group the target belongs to) can laugh at, and they can't laugh at it if it's not fucking funny. If you make a joke about trans people and it's not transphobic, but you do it so poorly nobody can laugh at it, they certainly won't, because it comes across as transphobic. They'll wonder 'what point is he trying to make here'.

It's why Dave Chappelle's bit about tranny vag being fake and so on got more backlash than Ricky Gervais' ten minutes about Caitlyn Jenner. Because it was flat and unfunny, to the point it seemed more like he was trying to preach a serious point than make a joke he didn't mean. Whereas Ricky's was about the taboo of saying a famous woman used to be a man, or her old name, even though we all knew it, and he framed it through turning into a chimp, and it was fucking ridiculous, with a little monkey walk and everything.

He was actually making a clever point. It got lost because you can't be too clever in standup, so he got some backlash, but a lot of trans people thought 'it wasn't transphobic, just it would've been funnier without the deadnaming'.

TLDR be funny and clever and the people who are the subject of the joke won't feel it's deliberately targeting them. If they do, possibly you are just unfunny with shitty delivery.

I understand your point, but I believe Maher, moreso than the other guys I mentioned, is less about delivering zingers & eliciting "hoo haws" from his audience than about presenting comparisons in order to make us think. Very similar to George Carlin's technique: yes, it's funny, but it also challenges the status quo sufficiently to get you to go "wait a minute". The most obvious place in his show that he does this is immediately following New Rules. That's why there's little to no laughter after he makes that transition.

I mean, I could be wrong, but that's how I've always seen it.
