Pretty much everything is better than IRC. The shit does not support any form of history, it leaks your IP as soon as you log in and it doesn't directly support any kind of image, video, audio communication and sharing. It also doesn't support text formatting so you cannot write in bold nor in italic and if you are posting snippets of code you have to rely on clients using a monospace font by default. As you can imagine, it does not support any kind of encryption either. It's just a fucking barebones protocol that people refuse to let die, but yes, of course there are better things around: just pick any random instant messenger and we can argue how, no matter how bad it is, it's likely to be overall at least slightly saner than IRC.

but irc has inline images. chat history. bnc clients. text formatting. file sharing (dcc). ssl. . custom fonts. all those features have been around since inception except for inline images.

No, it really doesn't. It's all hacked up in some shitty way.
If you want history (ie., reading what people wrote when you were online) you need to pay for a vps or something. Basically you *have* to stay online 24h/24 in order to have history, which defeats the whole purpose of having an history. Real-time video and audio (multidirectional) communication I believe is really impossible, the closest thing is prerecording whatever you wanna send and send it which defeats the whole purpose of audio/video communication.

I wish there was a way to bridge matrix into IRC. I want to join random matrix channels from my comfy IRC client. I tried matrix2051 but it was so buggy it crashes right after connecting every time.

retards don't realize that any service that stores your messages for you does the same thing as a xmpp or matrix home server, it is always connected or accepting connections to the shit you're subscribed to. It's the same thing, just you pay for it indirectly.

Clients can support whatever shot they what in whatever format and there are old ass format codes that most clients understand. Stop complaining and make Irc better or make matrix less ass

I never tried IRC but I saw a poster that said you can get doxxed anytime by someone posting who is [your user] and get your ip or something like that. Is that true?
