Although I do like it, I don't understand why they didn't add a clip on the screen's end of the cable to lock it in.
Then it would have been perfect.

My portable monitor has really high latency on USB-C and is fine on HDMI. I wonder if that's a general thing or if the chink screen is just bad

I've bought a ton of dead cables of these. Never had this issue with HDMI or DP.

Buy that VR type-c cable from oculus. Amazon and their store has it.

It shouldn't matter at all what cable you use.
The actual signals are the same: either Display Port or HDMI.

It must be some weird firmware bug or something.

I should clarify, the type of cable I want is USB-C to DP.

They used to do that with USB 2.0.
The bandwidth was nowhere enough for true video, so they send a compressed stream.
Same story with wireless video devices.

But with USB 3.1 the bandwidth is enough to send a normal video signal like HDMI.

DP is based since it can easily be converted to HDMI, DVI or VGA

I have a USB-C to HDMI cable.
Works perfectly on any device I've tested it with.

I too, enjoy sources of additional latency.

It wasn't so much a GPU as a glorified video decoder. The host PC would render your display and the driver would encode it to something that can be sent through USB 2.
I have one for VGA but I distrust the chink drivers in it.

How does VGA work then? Can it painlessly handle weird modelines?

That just means the devices on both ends have to support converting between formats.

It's called Displayport++. It has native lvds output for hdmi and dvi and can be found on most DP outputs

I see torn off heads of USB C ports every now and then on the floor of my office (we are all issued macs sadly).
