I've owned a sennheiser hd 439 for some 10 year, it was a nice set for me, at the time, though the build quality was pretty poor (the swivels broke and I had to glue them, so they don't swivel anymore, but at least it's in one piece). And I dislike them using proprietary cable connectors. Sound wise - something like the oneodio studio pros which I got later was a significant upgrade. So I wouldn't consider them a good value. I've listened to a friends SDR modded hd 800 and that was the headphone that blew me away. They are amazing, but the current asking price for the 800s is a bit too much, imo, when something like the hifiman ananda or even edition xs exists and those are almost as impressive as the hd 800 and even better in some regards.

Why do some people hate sennheisers? I guess the veil is off-putting for some the first time they hear it but after some time you realize its actually a good thing.
Veil is part of the reason senn headphones sound natural and have the signature sound.
Never heard a beyerdynamic but i guess with the overemphasis on the highs they make it sound like any other consumer headphone.
